poem reflecting on the ‘authorities’ in heritage

Bell, H. The Archaeologist and the Sites Curator in The Meeting Tree

The Archaeologist and the Sites Curator

You ask "By what Authority

I claim that this is so?"

With Science and Technology

Your mono-sided view

Has bound your mind with iron debris

And clouded your purview.

Your gods are mostly theorists

Experimenters all.

You won't accept hypothesists

Unless they have the gall

Within their flights of wordiness

To claim they've "proved" it all!

You come with hopes to find what's passed

Hopes for discovery.

You come with minds imperialist

You folk of high degree.

Your method's right, you will insist

And yet, you question me.

Well, forty thousand years ago

My consciousness did grow.

My race inherits wisdom's flow

Through rock and stone and tree.

You ask ‘By what Authority

I claim that this is so?'
