6496/50. Public Halls licensed under Theatres and Public Halls Act–Proposed review of conditions of license.

  1. That the Under Secretary, Chief Secretary's Department, in reply to a letter, dated 13th November, 1950, referring to License No. (691 granted to The Council of the City of Sydney for the Main Hall, ‘Town Hall, Sydney, and wherein it is advised that a review of the conditions applicable to Public Halls was being made with a view to ensuring that no application for a public meeting was rejected on political, sectarian or other unreasonable grounds, and that the question concerning a right of appeal to the Chief Secretary's Department in such cases was being considered, and wherein also the views of the Council in the matter were requested, be informed–

that the Council has never refused the letting of the Town Hall on political, sectarian or other unreasonable grounds;

that the Council is a corporate body elected by the Citizens and ratepayers of the City of Sydney and conducts its business without bias or sectional interest for the benefit of the Citizens as a whole;

that the Council resents interference by the Chief Secretary's Department in an avenue outside its prerogative;

that License No. 691 only applies to the safety in use as a public hall and does not give any right to the Chief Secretary's Department to dictate who shall or shall not use the premises.
