Tranby - 13 Mansfield Street, Glebe, Sydney

The first and only independent, Aboriginal controlled adult education centre in Australia and the scene of a number of key issues in indigenous activism.

The Co-operative for Aborigines Ltd, which runs Tranby Aboriginal College, was established in 1957 in the Sydney suburb of Glebe to provide teaching and learning facilities to adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Tranby was founded by the Reverend Alf Clint and the Australian Board of Missions (Anglican), but became independent in 1962. In 1980 Kevin Cook became the first Aboriginal General Secretary and since then, the majority of Board members and staff have been Indigenous.
